companion bakery, santa cruz

DSCF1834New series on Butter City! Bakery visits and reviews/notes on my consumptions. Perhaps I will cross post to my Yelp account…

I dropped by Companion Bakery in Santa Cruz this morning. It opened at 8am, I arrived at 8:05am, and I had to wait in line for about 10 minutes! Good signs of a tasty (or understaffed) bakery. The pastries in the display aren’t labeled or priced, which was a bit of an annoyance, but the cashier answered my many questions about what without judging.

I picked up 8 pastries (2 kouign amann, 1 chocolate chip cookie, 1 blueberry pumpkin seed scone, 1 bear claw, 1 lemon tea cake, 1 apple? galette, and 1 bacon and gruyere savory galette) for $26. I’ve tried a bite of everything and can already say that my favorite thing was the savory galette, and most of the pastries were on the sweet side. The kouign amann, which I was super excited about, was doughier than I prefer, but not excessively sweet. I like them to be flakier like croissants… which I heard are good at this bakery but I forgot to get one.

When they opened, they were still taking boules and baguettes out of the oven, and the place smelled amazing. Pastries were still warm at 8am and of course, best immediately consumed.

Happy Martin Luther King Jr Day!
